At a church property in Costa Mesa, one of our commercial plumbing accounts, you could smell gas in front of the youth center. We traced the strongest concentration to the ground between the sidewalks and some large trees, where the dirt was rock-hard. Because it was a live hazard, we shut the gas to the buildings off first. The trees came out, and when we dug down and cut through the roots, we found the cause: a 1-1/4-inch PVC gas line cracked under a tree, plus a second leak at a coupling. We cut out a section of the 2-inch main, ran new 2-inch PE with transition fittings to the existing line, reduced to 1-1/4-inch PE to the building, brought it up to a new meter riser and shut-off, ran tracer wire on the new lines, and relit all the pilots. No other leaks.
A campus-wide gas shut-off at Orange Coast College
When Orange Coast College was building its new child care facility, the contractor digging the site tore open a 2-inch Fletcher-coated gas line, the green fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) pipe used for direct burial. The leak was serious enough that the gas had to be shut off to the entire campus to stop it. That single line fed everything that runs on gas at the college, from the heating units that keep the rooms warm to the hot water and the boilers. We went out, found a way to cap the 2-inch line in the ground, and got the gas back on for the whole campus. The line was down for several hours while we worked out the cap, but the campus had its gas back the same day.
